Placing tiles is a accurate job. Each tile type has its own method. If you are unsure about the correct method please contact us, we will be happy to provide you with the right advice.
Can Cement tiles be placed outside?
Cement tiles can be placed outside as long as the tiles are properly impregnated. So there is no moisture in the tiles and they can not crack with frost.
We recommend placing the cement tiles under a roof like a veranda to shield them a little from the weather.
The pigments in cement tiles are organic and can become flat over time when they are in the open air. It is therefore advisable to impregnate an outside floor once every 2 years layer such as Azule Color Intensifier. This product enhance the colors and gives a beautiful appearance to the tiles.
Can Zelliges or Bejmat tiles be placed outside?
Can you tile over other tiles?
Can you tile over a wooden floor or other base?
How can you let your cement tiles overflow on another floor like wood or concrete?
If cement tiles need to be connected to another floor such as a wooden floor or a concrete floor, it is important that the required thickness is determined beforehand. A wooden floor is usually 2 cm thick. It may be thicker if a soundproofing subfloor is used. Cement tiles are approximately 1.6 cm thick and come out on a thickness of 2 cm incl. Tile adhesive. This thickness usually matches wood flooring. By working with a good filled tile glue, you can play with the thickness of the floor to make it fit properly with another floor. The joints between the 2 floors can be covered with special strips that are available for sale in almost all construction markets. If you don't want to use a strip you have to lay the tiles very neatly and tightly to allow the 2 floors to overflow neatly. However, keep in mind that a wooden floor is always expanding or shrinking. This can cause problems.
In the case of a concrete floor or a monolithic (flattened) floor, there may also be shrinkage or expansion. If the other floor is not new, and there may be dilatations, then the chance is much smaller that the tiles will crack. We advise to leave a small 2 mm seam between the floors so that any movement of the floors can be captured. Over time, the seam can be filled with a flexible kit or grout to the color of the floor so that it is hardly noticeable.
How thick should a joint be?
Keep the thickness of the joint to 2 mm. Thicker can be ugly and thinner is almost impossible to grout. You can lay the tiles right next to each other but we don't recommend that at all. The tiles must always be attached to a floor.
Zelliges and Bejmat tiles
Zelliges and Bejmat tiles can be placed tightly against each other. The irregulation that remains must be filled with grout. Without grout it is possible water / moisture can come between the tiles and when that happend the tile will be fall off the wall. It's possible to apply joints of 1 or 2 mm to ensure that the tiles have enough protected by a joint edge. Especially in wet areas like showers, this is applied.
Spanish tiles and Metro tiles
Hold on to a joint of 2 mm. Thicker is usually not nice. You can do it thinner but that's hard to add. Recently, we see the trend to add this type of tiles without grout. That looks very industrial. Please note that a joint is protection against moisture. So that's not recommended in wet areas.
How do you finish Zelliges on the sides?
Zelliges does not have a finished side, the edges has to be finished up. The finishing of the side can be done in different ways.
In Morocco, this method is always applied. You can apply an edge with between the tiles and the wall. As a result, the edge is nice and smooth and you see the side of the tile no more. The edge can then be painted in the color of the wall.
In the western countries a strip is stitched over each seam. The DIY shops provide numerous strips of different sizes and materials. This creates a more modern look.
45 degree sawn tiles
The most beautiful but also most time consuming solution. By cutting small pieces of tile on 2 sides in 45 degree, there is a kind of skirt that can be used to finish the edges. Very importent is to measure this well, but the result is beautiful!
In our showrooms we have examples of all 3 methods.
How do you finish Cement tiles on the sides?
Cement tiles do not have a finished side. That's because they exist out of different layers of concrete and color. If you want a nice finish we have special strips of stainless steel and aluminum. The strip can be glued behind the tile and haves the same thickness of the tile at the end.
The strips are also used as a transition from a cement tile floor to another floor.
Another possibility is to finish the tiles with grout at te end. This is a solution that you often see in the Mediterranean countries.
Can I use underfloor heating under my cement tiles?
Yes, that is possible. Note: There are a few conditions attached to this.
- The underfloor heating should be at least 6 cm below the tile surface, in the concrete floor.
- The underfloor heating must never be warmer than 30 degrees. Make sure that an intermediate thermostat is installed and that the tubes are never connected directly to the resistor.
- After the tile has been placed you have to wait for 3 weeks before the underfloor heating is allowed. The first time you turn the underfloor heating on it must be via a "boot menu". With this menu the underfloor heating increases the temperature very slowly, one degree each day. Too fast warming can cause tearing or even tiles and joints that come loose.
Cleaning the tiles
Cleaning and maintenance the tiles after placement ensures longer life. Removing stains and dirt requires special products that have been thoroughly tested by us.
When do you use Azule Degreaser?
Azule Degreaser is a strong degreaser. Your floor will shine again after using this product! If a floor is heavily dirty or filfty, it should be cleaned with Azule Degreaser. This product will also remove the built-in protective layer, resulting from mopping with Azule Dew soap or a green soap.
If the dirt has been drawn into the Cement tiles tyou have to take an extra step: Strip the tile of their old impregnation layer with Azule Losefix. After removing the old impregnation layer, the tiles can be cleaned with Azule Degreaser, and allow it to retract. Then clean the floor with clean tap water. Almost all the dirt will disappear now.
It is very important that the floor is now reimpregnated again according to our roadmap. See the video about cleaning a heavily polluted floor.
When do you use Azule Tile Soap?
Azule Dweil soap is a maintenance product for cement tiles. Mopping the floor weekly with Azule Tile soap provides a clean floor and gives the floor a protective microfilm layer. This layer protects the tiles from dirt, grease and acids.
Especially the first year after placement of the cement tiles, it is very important to mop the floor weekly or more with Azule Tile soap. The pores in the tiles will be accelerated full, causing a better defrost against dirt.
Excess soap residues can be removed with Azule Degreaser.
If you use a different cleaning product for your cement tile floor, make sure it is acid-free like a green soap or an olive soap, Savon de Marseille etc.
With what kind of products can I clean my tiles?
Cement tiles can only be cleaned with acid-free cleaners. Never use acidic agents like Vinegar, Chlorine or Antikal, which are funest for a cement tile floor. We advise Azule Tile Soap or else a soft soap or green soap. (Olive soap, Savon de Marseille)
Zelliges & Bejmat tiles
For these Moroccan wall tiles, regular cleaners can be used, hard cleaners and Antikal.
Spanish tiles & Metro tiles
These tiles can also be cleaned with regular cleaning products such as hard cleaner or tile cleaner.
Wanneer gebruik je Azule Losefix?
Azule Losefix is a product that resolves old layers of products, paint or glue residues from cement tiles. It is a powerful product that solves and can be very useful for getting to the stains under the impregnation layer.
Product: Losefix is a very powerful solvent / degreaser for heavy pollution.
Application: Removes quickly paraffin, graphite, oil and grease, penetrates into the tile. Losefix must not be mixed with water and is ready to use.
Instructions for Use: Shake first before applying the product. Use the products in floor sections no larger than 16m². Apply the Losefix and brush the grease and dirt with broom or brush. Then clean the floor thoroughly with water and allow it to dry. After using this product, the floor must be reimpregnated!
When do you use Azule Oil-Ex?
Product: Azule Oil-Ex is a revolutionary tool for oil stains.
Application: Removes almost all oil deposits out off porous natural stone, concrete, cement, brick, wood and porous surfaces. Oil-ex is not suitable for wet surfaces or plastic.
Instructions for Use: Shake for use. Pour evenly over the oil spill. Do not scrub or brush. Within 30 minutes, Oil-Ex sucks the retracted oil and forms into dry powder. Remove the powder with a broom or vacuum cleaner. Repeat the process with hard staines or extreme stains.
How do I clean my Cement tile floor outside?
Cement tiles that are placed outside, veranda or in a patio can be cleaned in the usual way, with Azule Tile Soap.
As the tiles suffer more from being outside, it may be necessary to thoroughly clean them trough the seasons. For example in spring and autumn.
You can do this with a high pressure / terrace cleaner. Also, in combination with Azule Decreaser, the tiles will be extra clean.
Help, I have stains in my tile, what should i do?
Portuguese tiles (cement tiles) are more porous than glazed tiles. That's because cement tiles are not baked.
To make sure that the tiles stain as less as possible, and to give the tiles a good protection, read the steps in Placement and Treatment.
You can remove the stains. Before you start brooming and scrubbing, you need to understand what kind of stain it is.
Stains by rising moisture and lime stains
These may occur just after installation of the floor or by a leak. In most cases, they also withdraw automatically.
The white odor of lime can usually be removed with Azul Grout Stain remover. If the floor is already impregnated, it may be necessary to remove the impregnated layer with Azule Losefix so that the floor can breathe and the spots can be removed.
Stains through fat such as olive oil, peanut butter or butter
These stains should be treated with Azule Oil-Ex. This product draws deep into the tiles to solve the stain. If the floor is already impregnated, it may be necessary to remove the impregnated layer first with Azule Losefix so that the stains can be removed.
Stains through liquids and acids
If you messed up, it should directly be removed so that it does not get a chance to move into the tile. Especially liquids with acids like red wine and fruit juice must be removed quickly. The acids are reacting with the lime in the tiles and will leave a stain. This is the same for marble and other natural stone floors.
Unfortunately there is no product for removing acid stain because it is a corrosion of the chalk layer. The best is to sand the tiles with a very fine waterproof sandpaper (grain 600 and grain 1000). The problem is often that you have to do this with all the tiles. There are specialised companies that can do this for you so you are sure of a good end result.
Never use acid cleaning products with vinegar or antikal. These products should be user for calcareous natural stone floors and tiles.
In case of such an accident that the tiles are so stained with an acidic detergent, inform your assurance if it's covered. Tiles that are glued to the floor have become realty property and should fall under the home insurance.
Can I get an old Cement tile floor clean again?
Yes, that's possible! We sell different products to clean and clear up old tiles.
In most cases, the old impregnation layer, or old washes, must be removed with a product like Azule Losefix. Then the tiles can be thoroughly cleaned.
After cleaning and drying, the tiles must be impregnated again. It is also possible to polish highly polluted or damaged floors. You then polish off a very small layer of surface and then the beauty of the floor appears again. As each floor and any contamination are different, we recommend that you contact us for customised advice.
The impregnation of Cement tiles is essential. There are a number of steps to be followed and some things to keep in mind to get a beautiful floor that lasts for years.
How do I impregnate a Cement tile?
ou can find the extended roadmap "How to impregnate my tiles" on this page: Placing and Treatment of the Cement tile
There is also a video (in dutch) where you can watch the whole proces.
Should marble mosaics also be impregnated?
No. Marble is much harder than Cement tiles. You won't get a lot of stains in Marble. Importent: Be careful with acids! Maintain a mosaic floor of marble with a green / soft soap or Azule Tile soap.
What impregnation products are there and what's the difference?
In our roadmap we regularly have 3 different impregnants that can be used to impregnate.
1. Azule Tile Sealant - Base impregnater that can be used as the first impregnation layer.
2. Azule Tile oil - Impregnater based on linseed oil. Usually used as 2nd layer in kitchens.
3.Color Intensifier - Resin based impregnater. Usually used as 2nd layer in wet areas.
So all three of these products are impregnants, however, they are used for different spaces or in a particular order.
Cement tile floors must always be provided with Azule Tile Sealant. This basic impregnating agent penetrates into the color layer and hardens it. In addition, 2 a 3 layers of Azule Tile Sealant would already give a very good protection.
For areas with greas like in kitchens, we recommend setting a layer of Tile oil after the Tile Sealer layer. Tile oil is already oily by itself, which makes other fats less likely to pull into a tile. Tile oil also has a color effect! This may also be a reason to use this product. Please note that the white in the tile would come slightly creamy because of the oil.
For wet rooms and toilets, we recommend Azule Color Intensefier. Despite the name, this product does not intensify the color as much as you would suspect. Color Intensifier is actually a coating. It contains resins that harden the tile surface. This creates a waterproof protective layer.
With this product you have to be very carefull when you apply it. If you use to much you can cause a trace of running tracks (and the toplayer cracks) and may result in a stainy surface. But this is also easy to solve with a little Azule Tile Sealant and a cloth.
There is another product that is used as an impregnation on vertical walls, for example on a kitchen backsplash. Azule NanoSpray is in a spray and contains a kind of Teflon. As a result, the tiles are hermetically sealed and the water or grease pours down from the tiles. This product is only suitable for walls and not for floors!
In our showroom, we can give you advice on the best impregnation in your situation.
How did you cut tiles? Which devices and how are you? We are pleased to inform you!
How do i make a corner or a inside corner?
Making an inner or outer corner is easy to do. Use 2 border tiles and cut through diagonally.
See the saw instruction on the picture.
How should i cut the tiles and with what kind of tools?
Our cement tiles must be sawn with a water-cooled tile saw. These are usually for rent at the DIY store. A grinder also offers results when it comes to small pieces, bends and holes.
Make sure that the tiles are washed out with clean water after sowing. The saw-water is usually discolored from all sowing and can retract on to the unprotected cement tiles.
Also with our other tiles such as Zelliges, Bejmat and Spanish tiles, a water-cooled tile saw (with diamond leaf) can be used.
For the subway tiles, so the thinner tiles is often a manual tile cutter already sufficient. Or perhaps a grinder for the corners and holes.
How did you cut tiles by default?
Cement tiles and Moroccan Zelliges are hard to cut in. It requires precision and patience, and often goes wrong. So take the time and order some extra tiles if tiles are to be cut by default.
A tile saw can in most cases be placed at an angle of 45 degrees, which will cause the tiles to be cut to the desired angle. Please note that cement tiles and zelliges are not very large and so you need to work close to the saw blade.

What is Azule?
Azule is the brand of our tile products. It's our own brand and you'll see it back on the boxes, underneath the tiles and in advertisements. In the Netherlands, only Designtegels sells the Azule products, however, international we only sell under the name Azule.
Azule is a derivative of the Arabic word Azul, which means tile.
The Spaniards took this word in the Middle Ages because of the many blue tiles came from northern Africa to Europe. They linked this to the color blue, but originally it means Tile.
Color differences in mutual tiles?
Azule Cement tiles and Moroccan Zelliges are handmade. Every tile is unique!
Therefore it is possible that tiles show slight color differences. This should be considered normal and gives our tiles just that handmade character and unique quality.
Important to know is that our tiles are made in different color baths. If you need extra tiles later, they may come from another delivery, and therefore another color bath. As a result, color differences may be visible. We always recommend that you make a proper calculation of the necessary tiles so that color differences is minimized.
